Soundcheck's John Schaefer Hosts an Evening of Music and Conversation
Free Event Takes Place Thursday, June 10, 7-8:30pm, at Peter Norton Symphony Space
WNYC, New York Public Radio's Soundcheck takes its pan-stylistic musical salon on the road for a free live taping at Peter Norton Symphony Space (Leonard Nimoy Thalia) on Thursday, June 10 from 7-8:30pm. Hosted by Soundcheck's John Schaefer and featuring performances by three artists whose styles cut across genres, the evening promises to offer the kind of inspired music-making and engaging conversation for which the program is known. The show will be aired on Soundcheck in two parts on June 17 and 18.
Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers has been praised for her "sweet and winsome tone" and her "scintillating virtuosity." Known for her insightful interpretations of both traditional and contemporary repertoire, Meyers has captivated audiences in concert halls around the world with her performances of works by Ravel, Debussey, Messiaen and Somei Satoh.
Pianist Arturo O'Farrill, a long time fixture on the Afro-Latin jazz scene (and son of legendary Latin Jazz artist Chico O'Farrill), will bring down the house with everything from straight-ahead standards to sultry Cuban classics to free jazz kaleidoscopic soundings.
Old-time bluesy pop music is combined with wry wit and keen intelligence in the works of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cynthia Hopkins. The Bessie and Obie-Award winning composer has been inspired by everything from African American spirituals to Japanese Noh theatre with her cutting-edge take on the contemporary alt-country music scene.
Each artist's performance will be followed by a conversation with John Schaefer about his/her style, approach, and craft.
Peter Norton Symphony Space (Leonard Nimoy Thalia) is located at 2537 Broadway at 95 th Street.
