WNYC's New Deal Murals: A Rediscovery

On August 2nd, 1939, WNYC unveiled four abstract murals painted for the station by Works Progress Administration artists Stuart Davis, John Von Wicht, Louis Schanker and Byron Browne.

Today, some of these remarkable compositions hold places of honor in New York City cultural institutions, restored to their former glory and accessible to all. Others have been lost, covered up and ignored.

Join us for a Multimedia Slideshow tracing the 75-year journey of WNYC’s WPA murals from conception to present-day and learn about two recent revelations: a long-lost mural by Louis Ferstadt, finished in 1941, but for mysterious reasons never hung, and an unrealized piece by Lee Krasner.
