Clinton and Obama Speak Before Mostly Female Audience
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY July 10, 2008 —This morning in Midtown Manhattan more than 2,000 mostly female Democratic supporters gave Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama a rousing welcome. WNYC's Bob Hennelly was there.
REPORTER: Clinton urged the hometown audience to pull out all the stops in their effort to put Obama in the White House. She was interrupted frequently by applause as she described this fall's election as having high stakes particularly for working mothers.
In her spirited address she got several laughs when she went after the current administration - at one point derisively referring to the president and vice president as those two oil men in the White House. In his remarks, Obama emphasized his own personal narrative which includes being raised by a single working mother and grandmother.
Obama got his loudest applause when he contrasted his support of women's reproductive rights with Sen. John McCain's opposition to abortion. Attendees paid anywhere between $250 to $23,OOO to attend.
As the crowd left, some audience members expressed support for what they called the dream ticket that included Clinton as vice president.
