by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY November 28, 2008 —A rush for bargains at a Wal Mart on Long Island turned into a deadly stampede early today. Nassau county police say a 34-year-old employee was knocked down when he opened the doors of the store at 5 AM for about 2,000 impatient customers. Detective Seargent Anthony Repalone was a witness:
REPALONE: While he was on the ground, he was certainly stomped upon by hundreds of people either stepping on him directly or stepping around him.
REPORTER: No official word yet on what caused the man's death. A woman who is eight months pregnant, and three other people, suffered minor injuries.
