Bloomberg Blasts Union Retirement Plan

NEW YORK, NY May 16, 2008 —State legislators have been considering an analysis of a legislative proposal to offer early retirement to city workers without knowing that the study had been paid for by their union.
The New York Times is reporting that a former city actuary, Jonathan Schwartz, was paid for his analysis by the municipal workers' union yet state lawmakers were never informed of the relationship.
The mayor reacted angrily to the news today.
BLOOMBERG: For all of the dysfunction and the outrageous ways they waste our money in Washington, at least they have independent budget numbers that are arrived at by experts, in this case it is just thoroughly corrupt.
REPORTER: The city has been fighting the proposal to offer early retirement to DC 37 workers, estimating it would cost the city $200 million annually.
