About the neighborhood : Bushwick Brooklyn has a large youth population - each square mile has two times the Borough's average number of children. Three quarters of those children are born into poverty, more than any other Brooklyn neighborhood. The local high school struggles to keep students in school -- the drop-out rate is significantly higher than the in the rest of the city. There is very little park space. But in the summer time, neighbors hang out on the steps of 3 and 4 story houses and latin music streams out of windows. Neighborhood residents are working to improve their neighborhood. Youth Organizers at Make The Road By Walking report that urges city leaders to provide more youth services in Bushwick. They are also trying to get a performing arts center built in the neighborhood. Churches and community groups have brought more and better housing, needed services, and an optimistic outlook to the neighborhood.
Radio Rookies on their neighborhood: David: Bushwick is cool. It's a fun place to live. Linda: Bushwick is ghetto and it's boring. Jesus: Bushwick is a community of mostly Blacks and Hispanics. It's a real alive neighborhood. Even at night, it's still alive. It barely ever sleeps. There's a lot of young people in my neighborhood. Jose: Bushwick is a low budget neighborhood with nothing to do. At least, there's cool people that I know. Karla: Bushwick is cool, friendly. I like it. |
