About the neighborhood: About 70,000 people ride the Staten Island Ferry each day and all of them end up in St. George at one end of the trip or the other. It's a free ride and only takes 25 minutes. Besides housing the ferry terminal, St. George is the borough's civic center and has all the courts, the Borough Hall and all the City and State buildings. It is also an arts center with the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences, the St. George Theater and Staten Island's largest public library. The neighborhood is a mix of office buildings, stores, restaurants, apartment buildings, townhouses and even some older detached homes. From the waterfront of St. George you can see the Manhattan skyline, New Jersey and the Statue of Liberty.
Radio Rookies on their neighborhood: Jonathan: St. George is an extremely cool place. Its buildings are old and that makes them look really interesting! At night, it is really silent. Even though it may not be the greatest place in the world, it is much better than the south shore where a lot of kids want to look the same. St. George can be really spooky. The buildings are so old that at night, they are creepy. The town looks like a ghost town. Christy: St. George is all right. I mean it's boring and can seem like a ghost town at night, but it grows on you after a while. To be honest, I don't like Staten Island that much, but at times, it's not so bad. Here's a piece of advice: don't wander Bay Street alone! Jacky: St. George is a picture that is painted in subtle colors... It's the type of place where everyone knows your name and your favorite cup of coffee. You often find teenagers and middle-aged lawyers and such sitting next to each other enjoying the local food. Some may not see the color that St. George possesses, but that's only because they don't know where to look. |
