Garrett Scott and Ian Olds spent the winter of 2004 filming a squad of American soldiers, among them Joseph Wood, in Fallujah. They join us to talk about the resulting documentary: “Occupation: Dreamland.” Then, Zadie Smith tells us about her new novel, On Beauty. Poet Sharon Olds explains why she’s protesting the National Book Festival. And, in today’s Please Explain feature, we’ll find out how memory works.

Filmmakers Garrett Scott and Ian Olds, and soldier Joseph Wood, tells us about their documentary, “Occupation: Dreamland.” The film follows the lives of soldiers in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during the occupation of Fallujah in the winter of 2004.

We’re joined by Jordan Grafman, Ph.D., of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and Dr. Barry Gordon, MD, Ph.D., the Director of the Division of Cognitive Neurology/Neuropsychology and The Memory Clinic at Johns Hopkins Medical Center.
