Arts in the Parks
Wednesday, July 30, 2008
We look into where free, large-scale performing arts festivals are happening in New York – and whether underserved communities are getting their fair share of them. Leonard talks to David Rivel, executive director of the City Parks Foundation. Also here is bachata music star Toby Love, who will be performing on August 26 at Highbridge Park at 174th St. & Amsterdam Ave.; and hip-hop culture pioneer and frequent City Parks concert host Ralph McDaniels.

last weekend I Wwnt to the Johnny Cash concert, a part of the River to River project and had VIP seats courtesy to WNYC and it was FANTASTIC. Thank you WNYC!
What happens to these arts programs during economic downturns? Will we see fewer concerts next summer?
I saw the dance with the excavator at Socrates Park, to the music of Maria Callas, as the sun set over Manhattan. It was MAGICAL and BEAUTIFUL! And the Coltrane Concerts in Marcus Garvey Park and Tompkins Square Park are just two more examples of why this is the best city in the world.
rain? what rain? My son titled his flickr album something like: Vampire Weekend: or how I learned to stop worrying and love torrential rain. He and his friends had a great time at Summerstage. (we won't mention the camera that no longer works...) thanks for great summer programming.
RE: rained out outdoor concerts
i was shocked several weeks ago at the salif keita concert in prospect park. there were monsoon style rains preceding the concert and throughout the entire opening group (halle). nobody budged and the crowds kept pouring in. every color, every age could be seen everywhere and after halle warmed it up, the soggy crowd danced non-stop to salif keita the entire concert. the community truly appreciates these events!
Longtime listener, longtime audio engineer. Several of the jazz riffs you use for transitions are badly up-cut. They're like nails on a blackboard. Can't somebody take the time to add reverb, or a smooth fade-out? Thanks.
One of the great things about summer in New York City is the concert series in Central Park --- SummerStage - ”Crown Jewel”. It’s an opportunity to discover great artists, their music, dance and other performances that you most likely would not see at the major venues in the city. SummerStage … It’s a Gem!
SummerStage is a kaleidoscope of great artists, music, performances, audiences and visitors from all over the world. It’s a place to kickback and enjoy an eclectic blend of grooves, unique only to New York City. Great SummerStage volunteers and crew, a place to meet new cultures and … see familiar faces and make new friends!
