R. Stevie Moore

Sunday, June 29, 2008

Called "The Godfather of Home Taping," R. Stevie Moore has created, recorded, and distributed hundreds of his idiosyncratic songs and albums since the 1960s. These songs encompass a huge range of pop styles, but always twist them into shapes that only Moore could make. Moore rarely performs outside of his bedroom recording studio, but this time he brings his songs and his stream-of-consciousness presentation style to the WNYC Studio to perform with fellow guitarist Mike Jodry, and talk about the music with host David Garland.

Ferron

Sunday, June 22, 2008

Ferron delivers her autobiographical songs with an intensity similar to an actor performing a soliloquy. She’s fully involved in the songs’ emotions, carrying both herself and her listeners to a place of vulnerable intimacy. She also has a skeptic’s sense of humor and an unusually rich voice, and has been called “the Johnny Cash of lesbian folksinging.” Ferron has been recording and touring since the 1970s, and now visits the WNYC Studio to perform her songs along with violinist/singer Bitch. Ferron talks with host David Garland about writing her songs, connecting to her Cree and Ojibway roots, and collaborating with Bitch on her latest album, “Boulder.”

Laura Marling

Sunday, June 15, 2008

Young British songwriter Laura Marling creates engrossing songs colored with shades of anger, forthrightness and joy. She sings them with an agile, emotional voice, accompanying herself on guitar. Here’s a rebroadcast of Laura’s Spinning On Air appearance back in February 2008, when this composer of worldly songs was only 17 years old. Laura Marling joins host David Garland to talk about and perform her songs. She’s back in New York this week for performances at Glasslands Gallery, June 16, and Mercury Lounge, June 18.

Dan Goldman’s Luxury Pond

Sunday, June 08, 2008

Dan Goldman is a songwriter based in Toronto, and his latest project is a group of unusual, tuneful, elegantly textured songs about sharks, boulders, frozen lakes, clay portraits, and the emotions they evoke and reflect. With accompaniments that include gorgeous string quartet arrangements by Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy), the sound-world of Goldman’s songs is lush and fresh. “Luxury Pond” hasn’t been released yet, and host David Garland offers you your first chance to hear this delectably original album.

Ed Askew

Sunday, June 01, 2008

Ed Askew could be considered an “outsider” artist—he certainly operates outside the mainstream—but there’s nothing arcane or closed-off about Ed’s songs. His first album was recorded in 1968, and Ed is still in touch with his unique muse, creating music that’s disarmingly full of heart. Ed’s music has been featured on Spinning On Air before, but this time he gives us the rare chance to hear him perform in the WNYC Studio and talk about his music with host David Garland. Pianist Thomas Bartlett and string player Sam Amidon, both accomplished songwriters and members of the band Doveman, provide the accompaniment for Askew’s in-studio performances.
