Deerhoof

Sunday, July 27, 2008

The band Deerhoof—vocalist/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki, drummer Greg Saunier, and guitarist John Dieterich—make high-energy experimental music which is somehow also fun, exciting rock. Deerhoof is full of surprises: an exhilarating romp through a sonic world of tuneful melodies, percussion eruptions, guitar virtuosity, and sudden twists and turns. Host David Garland welcomes Deerhoof to the WNYC Studio for a live performance and to talk a bit about how they put their extraordinary music together. This show was first broadcast in March, 2007, and airs tonight to bring attention to WNYC FM 93.9's broadcast of Deerhoof and The Metropolis Ensemble at Celebrate Brooklyn later this week, Friday, August 1st, 8 pm.

Sean Smith

Sunday, July 20, 2008

Guitarist/composer Sean Smith creates adventurous instrumental pieces for steel-string guitar, inspired by his ongoing quest for reality, his fascination with a 1930s prose poem, and the pleasure of riding the bus to the library. Sean brings his guitar to the WNYC Studio to perform, and talk about his music with host David Garland. Influenced by the "American Primitive" sound of John Fahey, by minimalism, and by a his own rich sense of harmony and the nimble dance of his fingers, Sean explores engrossing musical worlds with his guitar. This show first aired Nov. 25, 2007.

Avocet

Sunday, July 06, 2008

Amplified dangling forks and spoons provide accompaniment to the songs of Avocet. Avocet is Meara O’Reilly, who has visited Spinning On Air before with the band Feathers. This time she brings her voice, guitar, and the extraordinary amplified silverware instrument she created, to the WNYC Studio for performances with her friends Eban Portnoy and Sarah Magenheimer of the band Flying. An avocet is a kind of water bird, and avian themes abound in Meara’s songs. She talks about this, her instruments, and more, with host David Garland.
